Cardiothoracic Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Network:

Heart and Lung transplant
 Heart and Lung transplant logo

We are a small UK-wide network of physiotherapists specialising in heart and lung transplantation, as well as mechanical circulatory support. Across the country, five centres provide adult lung transplant services and six provide adult heart transplant services. All six heart transplant centres also care for patients who rely on long-term, implantable mechanical circulatory support devices, most commonly a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Physiotherapy plays a crucial role throughout the patient journey: most patients undergo a physiotherapy assessment before surgery as part of their evaluation and optimisation, and many experience prolonged stays in intensive care and hospital afterwards. During recovery, physiotherapy is essential in supporting respiratory recovery and rehabilitation, enabling patients to return home, and helping them to regain independence and thrive in the long term.
